Research Question: How can we teach multicultural education? Contributed by: Kana Sonoda
1. School to Teach on Biracial People
Revised ethic textbook for fifth and sixth grader includes chapters about biracial and adoptees. This change came from the fact the attention has been paied to children in multi-cultural families who suffer from disadvantage or discrimination. Such disadvantage or discrimination results from their accent, physical appearance and culture upbringing. We need to teach children that discrimination against, disrespect for biracial people and overseas adoptees are wrong and encourage them to get along with other people regardless of race. The revised textbook offers fifth grade kids with a subject, "learning about difficulties biracial friends." Students discuss multi-racial friends suffering and the need to respect people each other. It offers sixth grade kids with a subject, "learning the ways to be intimate with Koreans living overseas and having exchanges with them." The textbook can also provides kids with a chance to discuss a person who was adopted into a family in the United States. The situation is how you would tell him about aspect of Korea when he comes to Korea.
As my reaction, I agree with ideas of textbook. As for the goal of sixth grade, it gives kids a chance to learn what is the adopted situation and know different culture. From this, I found that learning culture is the best step for kids to find that differences are interesting and it help them to live in multicultural society. 2. Multicultural Perspectives: Curriculum Reform
The present curriculum have to be modified and strategies developed. One of the dilemmas of curriculum reform is that weather to teach multicultural education as a separate subject such as English Language or Mathematics or to teach it part of an overall school curriculum. In this study, 44% of the 36 respondents agree with the opinion that multicultural education should be related to all subjects, while those of 26% thinks that multicultural education should be taught as a separate subject. In addition to this, more than 70% of the respondents including parents and teachers, concern that multicultural education in school is limited: it is limited to econopolitical history and development of a few selected countries. As this fact shows, minority parents identified that the reliance on the mainstream culture for curriculum design and evaluation responsible for the academic failure of their children.
Teachers have to interact with students and make lesson plans. They also should validate students' values with in both their in school and out-of-school realities. In my opinion, multicultural education should be not only related to all subjects but also separate subject. If it relates to any other subject such as English Language or Mathematics, children would find out a good meaning for learning each subject. It will encourage them to learn it. On the other hand, if multicultural education is taught as a separate subject, It would be concentrated on its details and make school activities brisk more.
This article also will help me to make lesson plans as a professional teacher. I learned that teaching multicultural education is creating their original lessons based on their students and environments around them rather than following a certain rule.
3. Diversity Improves Education
Chang claims that diversity enhances the educational experience of all students. In addition to the importance of having a diverse population of students, he asserts that school should provide programs that bring students together, encourage dialogue and give minority students the ways to success. The reason why an increase of underrepresented students enhances educational opportunities for all students, according to the social science research, is that racial differences are associated with differences in viewpoints and opinions, an increase of underrepresented students give a chance to experience something and learn new outlook or ideas to all students. A benefit associated with racial diversity is that minority influences majority when students discuss an issue such as the death penalty with generally different viewpoints in a group. Minority causes majority to think about the issue in different ways. This shows that a positive effect of diversity. In order to advance diversity, besides bringing diverse students together, school must provide them with stimulating courses covering historical, cultural, social bases of diversity and community. It also should give students opportunities to interact across racial and other social differences.
I really agree that diversity enhance education. Students can think about a issue seriously when they are in particular situation that they interact with people who have different viewpoints from them. I have learned a lot of things from people who have different background or customs since I came here.

4. Bilingual Education Has Not Inhibited Immigrant Assimilation
Billingual education and English-only education have never achieved: some students clearly benefited from English-only Programs, while others benefited from bilingual education. However, one data says that there is no obious crisis surrounding bilingual education, as new immigrant groups have moved up the socioeconomic ladder. Bilingual education had been provided for minority children to have equal education before the United States has immersed its immigrant children in nothing but English, which has been proved its effectiveness.
It is a good way that mmigrant children may adopt to their school, where English education has been provided, only if school's culture is not in conflict with that of home. However, many parents are intent on preserving native culture for their children. Also, those who frustrated that their ambition has not been transmitted to their children, may become convinced that only English education will set their children straight.
As for my reaction, it is difficult for those two sides, bilingual education and English-only education to reach satisfaction. Because if children were immersed in English-only programs, it would means that their own language, including their culture are denied. However, it is true that those who speak English obiously success in the United States today, so I think that's why educaters teach English immigrant children. However, it would be so sad that English education set children straight not having knowledge the other culture or language and if the thing became so, diversity would disappear.

5. Japan's Textbooks Reflected Revised History
The Japanese Ministry of Education ordered publishers to delete passages stating that the Imperial Army ordered to commit mass suicide during the battle of Okinawa, as the island was about to fall to American troops in the final month of the war. One old textbook explained, ''There were some people who were forced to commit suicide by the Japanese Army,'' however, in the revision ordered by the ministry, it now reads, ''There were some people who were driven to mass suicide.''
I completely disagreed with this textbooks revised history. This revised textbooks prevent students from learning real history. I also think that this makes it difficult for students to live in multicultural world.
